When members first join Toastmasters, they receive a copy of the Communication & Leadership manual. The C&L manual is designed to take members through the basic elements of public speaking, including speech organisation, vocal variety, gestures, etc.

Speech 1:
The Icebreaker
(4-6 minutes)
As the name implies, this speech is an introduction to public speaking. The objectives are to begin speaking before an audience, and to introduce yourself to your fellow Club members.
Speech 2:
Speaking with Sincerity
(5-7 minutes)
Continue to get over nervousness by speaking on a subject you thoroughly understand; the objective is to speak with sincerity and passion.
Speech 3:
Organise Your Speech
(5-7 minutes)
The objective of this speech is to teach the speaker to organise a speech, building a clear outline that includes an opening, body and conclusion.
Speech 4:
Show What You Mean
(5-7 minutes)
This project gets you to work on body language and gestures during your speech to develop a sense of timing and natural, smooth body movements, and to explore the different ways of using body language.
Speech 5:
Vocal Variety
(5-7 minutes)
This project works on a speaker's rate of delivery, volume, speed, pitch, emphasis, etc.
Speech 6:
Work with Words
(5-7 minutes)
Work on proper word choice, avoiding the use of jargon and generalisations. To gain a thorough understanding of the functions and uses of the spoken word and avoid common mistakes in word use.
Speech 7:
Apply Your Skills
(5-7 minutes)
This project brings together and applies all the communication and speaking skills learned in the preceding projects. You also need to research facts and support the arguments in your speech.
Speech 8:
Add Impact to Your Speech
(5-7 minutes)
This project uses PROPS in your speech. Teaches you the value of props and how to use them effectively in your presentations.
Speech 9:
Persuade with Power
(5-7 minutes)
To present a speech that persuades the audience to accept your proposal or viewpoint by appealing to the audience's self-interest, building a logical foundation for agreement, and arousing emotional commitment to your cause.
Speech 10:
Inspire Your Audience
(8-10 minutes)
The final project in the C&L Manual calls on you to move and inspire your audience with a well-presented and well-prepared speech.
On completion of the C&L manual, participants will receive the Competent Toastmasters (CTM) Award, before progressing to the
